PSS: if you are fine with risking your ranged against units like chariots or flyers you can get a thane/runesmith frontline. PS: base irondrakes don't suffer a lot from friendly fire. The most common problems you might have are: 1) they need a straight line of sight, so you need to be 100% sure that they can see the enemy 2) if even 1 model is in melee and you don't have guard mode active, then all the unit will go charge the enemy unit in melee, which is bad 3) in some situation where the line of sight is there but is narrow af (like when you want to shoot between broken walls) you might want to shape your unit for that case (in the case of walls a 3/4 man wide column is idea, while on the field since you need to turn a lot a square is better) and target manually. Honestly with regular irondrakes i never had problem with placing them in holes in my frontline.
